Watercolor
The dominant regional medium, for practical reasons: it suits the light and the subject matter, it travels well for plein air, and the class programs here teach it thoroughly. Regional watercolor societies run their own juried shows with real standards.
Pastel
Southwest Florida has an unusually strong pastel community with an active society, workshop program and juried exhibitions. Pastel handles the region's skies and water better than almost anything else, and the best local work in the medium is genuinely competitive at a national level.
Oil and acrylic
Landscape and coastal work in oil fills the commercial galleries; acrylic dominates the class programs and community shows for its speed and forgiveness. Plein air groups paint year round, moving to shaded and early slots in summer.
Fine craft: clay, glass, fiber, wood
Guild support here is deep, and the equipment access at municipal studios makes clay and glass practical for artists who could not otherwise fire or fuse. Fiber and quilting have large, well organized memberships and their own exhibition circuit.
Photography
Birds, water and weather make this a photographer's region. Camera clubs run competitions on a monthly cycle, and photography now holds its own category in most regional juried shows rather than being lumped in with digital art.
Sculpture and three dimensional work
The hardest work to show and sell locally, because pedestal space is scarce and shipping is expensive. Outdoor festivals and the larger nonprofit centers are the realistic venues.
Printmaking and mixed media
Smaller but active, usually taught through the nonprofit centers with shared press access. Mixed media has expanded fast in regional shows as juries have loosened category definitions.
