Between the two markets
Bonita Springs and Estero sit on the county line between the Fort Myers and Naples scenes, and their arts organizations draw audiences from both. The result is a strong middle market: better funded than the inland leagues, less expensive than the Naples galleries.
The Bonita arts center
An established nonprofit center with galleries, a large class and workshop program, festivals and a performance side. Its juried exhibitions attract regional entries, and its campus hosts outdoor art festivals in the winter season that are among the better attended in the county.
The Estero league
A member organization running exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations out of community facilities, with a strong plein air and watercolor contingent. Meetings often include a working demonstration by a visiting artist, which is worth attending even if you have no intention of joining.
Mall and cooperative galleries
Cooperative galleries in the area's shopping centers have been a durable model here: artists share rent and staffing, take turns sitting the gallery, and sell to a foot-traffic audience that would never seek out a downtown space. Quality is uneven by nature, and the good ones are very good.
Practical notes
- This is the easiest part of the region to visit without a plan: everything is off the same few miles of Old 41 and Corkscrew Road.
- Festival weekends in January and February bring traffic; arrive early.
